Course Description
Rationale:
The leadership of the trade union movement the world over operates within the ambit of balancing the expectations of its membership and that of the general expectations of the other social partners and its other stakeholders. The leadership of all the parties to workplace relations is always at the cutting edge of the nature and dynamics of the Industrial relations sphere within their operational environment. If it is vibrant and constantly evolving harmoniously, or, stressful and conflict prone, then, most of the times, it could be laid at the door step of leadership actions and inactions.
The course will examine this leadership quagmire; the seeming contradiction between executing trade union leadership responsibilities and maintaining harmonious industrial relations in the workplace. However, we think that the job is relatively easier once the problem of proper understanding of what we ought to be doing as leaders on both sides of the divide within the workplace relations. What may this understanding be; that there ought not to be any serious conflict or contradiction since the maintenance of harmonious industrial relations is one of the major responsibilities of leadership on all sides of the table within the Industrial Relations space.
