Course Description
THE RATIONALE
MapInfo Professional is desktop Geographic Information System (GIS) software used for mapping and location analysis.
This course studies and reveals relationships, patterns, and trends of data through the ability to visualize, analyze, edit, interpret, understand and present output.
THE COURSE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this training, participants will be able to learn:
- Basic understanding of the theory of databases, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in general, and of MapInfo in particular.

- Creation of new tables work with raster layers

MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION AND PRESENTATION OF MAPINFO SOFTWARE
- What is GIS?
- The vector objects definition (point, polyline, and polygon)
- Vector Data
- Projection
- Layers
- Main Toolbar
- Clone/Previous/Change Views
- Layer control
- Browser & Map Windows
- Browsers
- Selecting & Selection Tools
MODULE 2: GETTING STARTED WITH MAPINFO
- Open / Save / Close a MapInfo document (.wor)
- Create a new workspace and open a MapInfo table
- Navigate in the different windows, menus and tools
- Navigate in the map and attribute windows
- Display coordinates
- Measure a distance
- Interaction between geometry and attribute data set
- Create a new MapInfo table from a selection
MODULE 3: STANDARD MANIPULATIONS, WORKING WITH RASTER LAYERS, IMPORTING EXTERNAL DATABASES AND ATTRIBUTES MANAGEMENT
- Standard manipulations
- The layers and legends control
- The layer DRAW
- Labels (display objects’ attributes data on the map)
- Create a legend
- Thematic analysis (simple functions)
- Working with raster layers
- Raster management within MapInfo
- Logical raster layers
- Importing external databases and table joining
- Analysis and modification of the structure of a table by adding new fields
- Import of Microsoft Excel data (.xls)
- Join between 2 tables (2 methods)
- SQL Queries and selection in MapInfo
- Thematic analysis, advanced setup, advanced labels / export
MODULE 4: ADVANCED RASTER AND VECTOR DATA MANAGEMENT
- Digitizing
- Microsoft BING Maps and OpenStreetMap
- Geo referencing raster imagery
- Redistricting (depending on time)
- Advanced SQL queries and selections
- Advanced SQL language
MODULE 5: ADVANCED CREATION OF VECTORIAL DATA (MAPCAD)
- Verification of data
- CAD databases
- Import and structure AUTOCAD datasets (DXF / DWG)
- External database
- External relational external database (Microsoft Access, PostGIS)
- Mapping RDBMS tables
Course Requirements:
To gain the most from this course, participants should be familiar with desktop computers and have a good knowledge of Windows. They should be at ease with such tasks as moving & resizing of windows, switching between applications and loading applications. They should appreciate that files or programs of similar types can be stored together under an appropriate directory structure. Ideally participants will be able to create directories and locate files using Explorer.
