Course Description
Negotiation refers to the interactive process we participate in to advance individual and joint interests. Almost every transaction with another individual involves negotiation. We often use the same methods of negotiation in our personal, professional and political worlds. As we learn in this course, negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship management are complex processes. Successful practitioners possess and apply a blend of perceptual, persuasive, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
Intrinsic in this course is a basic assumption and that is that a new labour movement is emerging or has emerged. Impliedly, there is an old which is giving way to the new. A perception of change within the movement which has generated new structures and the subsequent impact of these nascent pillars on the operational dynamics of the trade unions become central. When these other two challenges are mixed with the character and nature of the present and emerging leadership within the movement, every labour activists begins to ponder what the future of the movement holds not only for the workers, the society and other stakeholders but to the movement as a social platform.
We begin this course by studying the conceptual framework of negotiations, as it applies to all areas of negotiation in the public and private sectors. We will focus on business negotiation skills and strategies designed to maintain healthy business relationships. Specifically, we will explore the concepts, processes, strategies, and ethical issues related to negotiation and appropriate conduct in multicultural business contexts. In this course, we study the theory, processes, and practices of negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship management to help you be a more effective negotiator in a variety of situations. We examine effective and ineffective strategies, determine why they work well and discuss successful alternatives if they do not. We also identify patterns of negotiation and conflict resolution in different national and cultural contexts, to gain an understanding for how interpersonal style, personality, culture, and other variables influence our negotiation and decision-making skills.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to;
- Identify and explain the theory, processes, and practices of negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship management;
- Explain the principles, strategies, and tactics of effective negotiation and professional relationship management;
- Compute the variables in negotiations;
- Recognize that Synergy is a critical factor in negotiation
- Assess the importance of various factors that impact negotiations, including specific issues in question, different stakeholder positions, interests, relationships, and group dynamics;
- Create a platform for networking amongst participants in the Industry
- Inculcate in the participants a deeper understanding of the current challenges facing the Trade Union movement
- Assist participants evolve the needed capacities and capabilities for tackling known and future threats to the movement
- Evaluate the available and expected tools and skills that may be needed to successfully confront threats to workers in the industry
