Course Description
Rationale:
Intrinsic in this course is a basic assumption and that is that a new labour movement is emerging or has emerged. Impliedly, there is an old which is giving way to the new. A perception of change within the movement which has generated new structures and the subsequent impact of these nascent pillars on the operational dynamics of the trade unions become central. When these other two challenges are mixed with the character and nature of the present and emerging leadership within the movement, every labour activists begins to ponder what the future of the movement holds not only for the workers, the society and other stakeholders but to the movement as a social platform.
Our focus is to examine some of these challenges especially that of Change, emerging structures, within the context of the nature and character of the overarching leadership behavior in the movement. This will clearly assist us in boldly making pronouncements as to the direction of the movement in the near and distant future.
The course is designed to look at some of the key concepts, look at the implications of these prevailing style of leadership on the labour movement, outline some of the emerging structures and their impact on the movement and then look at the nature and character of prevailing leadership within the labour movement as it is presently constituted within the trade union space in Nigeria.
Course Objective:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to;
- Create a platform for networking amongst participants in the Industry
- Inculcate in the participants a deeper understanding of the current challenges facing the Trade Union movement
- Make participants know the appropriate strategies to adopt to engage these threats
- Assist participants evolve the needed capacities and capabilities for tackling known and future threats to the movement
- Assess the available and expected tools and skills that may be needed to successfully confront threats to workers in the industry
- Change perceptions and attitudes of participants for all social partners in the industry
- Create an awareness amongst the participants about the objective realities of the operational environment of the industry
- Create a better understanding amongst the participants about the primacy of the Industry as a living foundation for all social partners
- Create a more focused and purposeful leaders able to effectively and creatively interact with changes in the industry.
- Ensure that participants seek at all times the maintenance of creative workplace harmony in the Industry.
