Course Description

Introduction:

Industrial Relations is rooted in the Workplace. Its character, its nature, its objectives and its propelling force are all anchored around the workplace and its various intervening forces. Without the workplace, Industrial Relation becomes inchoate. Emerging Relations in our workplaces define and shape overall Industrial Relations theories and practices. It is in the various workplaces that Industrial Relations is practiced.

Workplaces however exist in organizations. And, organizations behave in certain ways just like any other organism. It has structures, textures and nuances that are built around a process of continuous interactions amongst themselves thus creating a system or a seamless chain that allows it carry out its activities effectively and efficiently thus better positioned to attain its objectives. It has both strong and subtle or soft forces; hard and software and much more, it has culture and Laws that regulate its activities keeping it cohesive even in the face of various diversities in interests, objectives and desires expressed at different levels of the organization.

The core purpose of every organization is the creation of goods and services. If this is left at this level of understanding, difficulties may not arise but when we take it beyond this and seek an understanding of how these products are then distributed and consumed; a whole lot of issues are thrown up. When we also seek an understanding of the character of the factors involved in this production, myriads of challenges immediately confront us

However, it ought to be understood that it is the production of goods and services that is essential for organizational growth and all of us belong to one organization or the other either directly or indirectly and this defines and determines a whole lot of issues concerning our lives. It is therefore important that we seek a clear understanding of how organizations behave and how Industrial Relations can contribute positively to ensure that these behaviours generate the best outcomes possible for the benefit and welfare of all members of the society.
