Course Description

Course Overview:

The absence of industrial conflict may not entirely approximate to Industrial harmony and may not necessary lead to increasing productivity in the Workplace but a creatively managed workplace conflict impulses sustainable growth in the workplace having been anchored on sustainable harmonious relations in the workplace. Without workplace harmony and indeed without increasing productivity of the factors of production, it is difficult to attain organizational growth thus a healthy corporate bottom line. Industrial Harmony is key to Industrial Productivity which is a basis for organizational growth.

When we take a historical excursion into the dynamics of industrial conflict in Nigeria, it becomes clear the enormous cost which industrial conflicts puts upon our workplaces. In 1975, the nation was nearly grounded because Petroleum Tanker drivers went on strike and refused to lift Petroleum products from the refineries because of Conflicts. In the 80s, operations of Flow stations, Refineries and Export terminals had at one time or the other been disrupted as a result of Disputes. The Minimum wage debacle led to some oil facilities and Installations being shut down and in January 2012, the whole nation was shut down for almost a week as a result of the senseless price hike of Petroleum Products imposed on the citizenry and just few weeks ago, the Downstream sector was nearly shut down completely because of the dispute the United Labour Congress of Nigeria (ULC) a new labour center to which NUPENG is affiliated to as a result of unresolved conflicts in the workplace.

When workplace relations become conflict –prone and are allowed to snowball into crisis, productivity nose dives and the organization suffers. When organizations do not grow appropriately all the parties in the workplace suffer adversely. The worker, the Management and indeed the organization itself; this makes it imperative on all the key players within organization to ensure that high degrees of harmony is maintained in the workplace which propels productivity thus profitability and eventually the survival of the organization.

The paradox is that while all the parties understand the importance of workplace harmony and the role it plays on productivity, they have still allowed relations to lapse into crisis. They have not taken enough steps to take responsibility for harmony in the workplace while there is a tendency to believe that it may not be their duty to impact general workplace ambience.

That is the problem. Why would parties in the workplace take actions that may destroy workplace harmony? Are there factors that make it difficult for forces that may lead to conflict not to be identified early, dissected and dealt with appropriately before they grow bigger? Does it mean that organizations are no longer lovers of harmony and does not take steps in cultivating it? What makes it difficult for workplace parties to maintain a constant balance in workplace relations knowing its criticality to the survival of the organization upon which all of their benefits are anchored upon?
